White, 2023
Context: Short Film by Danielle Dean commissioned by The Swiss Institute in NYC
Role: Sound Designer and Composer
Description:
White is an animated work that traces the colonial history of dairy farming in Taranaki, New Zealand, beginning with a 1930s British postcard image and moving into a speculative forest landscape shaped by loss and erasure. The sound design and score respond to this shift, layering processed environmental textures, archival references, and synthetic elements to evoke both pastoral imagery and its underlying violence. Sound functions as a narrative counterpoint, destabilizing the apparent calm of the postcard scene and guiding the viewer into a space where indigenous ecologies and knowledge systems surface through absence and distortion. The work uses sound to underscore how colonial agricultural practices transformed the land and severed relationships between environment, memory, and care.
